India is home to yoga, so you can expect a lot of choice. The ashram I spent time at was in the southern state of Kerula and I used word of mouth to find it after I arrived in India. The accommodations were modest, the food was tasty and the yoga instruction sound. Every day, we practiced Sunrise Yoga on the shore of a small lake and every evening we chanted as the sun set, making an unforgettable experience all round.

Several of my yoga teacher friends travel to Mexico for annual yoga retreats to both enhance their own practice and escape winter for a short time. Costa Rica is another popular yoga retreat destination.

The directory in Yoga for Dummies is more concise. Most yoga books will provide information based on the experiences of the author and usually include retreat suggestions.

Taking fellow students and instructors out for tea and a chat about their retreat experiences will also bear fruit.
